Aside from the magnificent building of Milenijum (Millennium) sports center, the citizens of Vrsac will soon have another modern sports facility at their disposal. Namely, the city stadium, which is used by both professional and amateur athletes on a daily basis, will get a new look in 2012.

The municipality of Vrsac is going to invest EUR 1.5 million in the reconstruction of locker rooms, running track, stands, the construction of a roof above the stands… The stadium in Vrsac was built shortly after the World War II. It was designed by the author of the famous Olympic Stadium in Berlin. Although athletics became popular in this area in 1926 when the Vrsac Athletics Club was formed, this sports facility has not undergone any adaptation ever since it was constructed so that its reconstruction was inevitable.

- The municipality has decided to have the stadium reconstructed because it was in a very poor condition. It was not the place where athletes could practice for real. The locker rooms have already been reconstructed, whereas the works on sewerage, hydrant network, electric grid, and removal of the existing fence around the stadium are underway. Construction of a base for the running track is also in the pipeline, while a Tartan track donated by Hemofarm Foundation will be laid in the very end – Nenad Nisevic, director of the project investor, the Vrsac company Varos, says in an interview for eKapija.

As our interlocutor explains, the stadium will get a running track with six round lanes and eight lanes for 100-meter races. The plan is to do everything in accordance with the propositions of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) so the stadium can host various athletics competitions.

- The municipality of Vrsac has set aside RSD 20 million for the first phase of reconstruction of the stadium, whereas the total estimated value of the stadium is about EUR 1.5 million. In the second phase of the stadium reconstruction, which is planned to kick off next year, the stands will be reconstructed, new seats and a new lighting system will be installed, while certain part of the stands will be covered – says Nisevic.

The author of the stadium reconstruction project is Vrsac-based Biro Stil, whereas Drugi Oktobar from Vrsac is entrusted with the current construction works.
