Overview
The municipality of Kanjiža is situated in the northern part of Bačka District near the state border with Hungary. It covers the area of 400 km², and includes thirteen settlements: Horgoš, Male Pijace, Martonoš, Mali Pesak, Orom, Doline, Novo Selo, Totovo Selo, Velebit, Vojvoda Zimonjić, Trešnjevac, Adorjan, and the town of Kanjiža, its administrative centre.
It is 200 km away from Belgrade International Airport and 130 km from Novi Sad.
Population
The municipality of Kanjiža is a multiethnic community with a population of 27,510, the majority being Hungarians. The town of Kanjiža, the administrative centre of the municipality, has 10,193 inhabitants. According to the data from 2006, there are 2,500 unemployed persons.
Economy
Rich soil, clay, oil, natural gas, and thermal waters are natural resources exploited by dominant branches of economy in the municipality, such as agriculture and food processing industry, construction material industry, and rehabilitation and recreational tourism. Austrian “Tondach Group” had established a roofing tile factory in Kanjiža.
Infrastructure
Being a municipality bordering Hungary, Kanjiža is one of the busiest gateways to the Central European countries, and an important route for international traffic and movement of goods. On the territory of the municipality, near Horgoš, there are both railway and road border crossings with Hungary, the former being among the busiest in the region.
Tourism
Thermal waters, mud baths, the river Tisa, picturesque scenery, hunting grounds, the Selevenjska woods, culinary specialties together with cultural and sport events make Kanjiža a very attractive tourist destination. The most significant tourist centre in the municipality is the spa resort in Kanjiža. Operating for more than nine decades, the spa resort has grown into a modern rehabilitation centre, equipped with the most advanced equipment for physical medicine and rehabilitation. Mineral waters and mud are used in treatment of rheumatism, and post-injury treatment of the bone-joint apparatus, but also for the recreational activities.
