– The idea behind the project is for various biowaste from households, such as meat and fish waste, used coffee beans and used cooking oils to be turned into new bioproducts, for example, into additives to be used in food and animal feed, coffee oils, bioethanol, bioplastic etc. At the moment, the first version of the catalog of urban biowaste, which will include examples of good practice, is finished. The BioSense Institute is working on researching the market of bioproducts, as well as on defining a business model which is in line with the principles of circular economy. With innovative solutions for biowaste disposal, we want to inspire others to make a similar step, because it is only together that we can considerably reduce the negative impact of organic waste on the environment – said Tatjana Knezevic of the BioSense Institute.
All the results of the project will be available to policy creators, so that the concept of circular economy would be implemented as well as possible.
In addition to defining new value chains for the use of biowaste and establishing the processes that will enable this, the idea of the project is to raise awareness and improve the society’s habits by including citizens and to change the way biowaste is treated and perceived in local communities, the press release adds.
As it accounts for nearly a third of home waste, the aim is for citizens to be educated about the numerous social, economic and ecological benefits that can be made through its proper disposal.
The WaysTUP! project is financed from the program of the European Union for research and innovations Horizon 2020.
