Serbia 63rd among 189 countries by Human Development Index

According to the latest Human Development Report 2019 of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), Serbia's Human Development Index (HDI) for 2018 is 0.799, which puts it in the 63rd place among the total of 189 countries and territory, two spots up from last year's report. The champion of human development is Norway, followed by Switzerland and Ireland.

The HDI is a composite of measures taken in three areas: life expectancy, education and per capita income. This parameter puts Serbia in the category of countries with a high human development, together with Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia and Albania, to mention the countries of the region. The other countries in the region, Croatia, Slovenia, Montenegro, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria belong to the category of countries with a very high human development.
