RSD 46.8 Million for Development of Belgrade Gate on Nis Fortress – Works to Start Soon

According to the Program of Local Economic Development of the City on Nis, for the development of the plaza in front of the Belgrade Gate on the Nis Fortress, over RSD 46.8 million has been set aside and the works should start soon, announced the city councilor in charge of culture, Adriana Anastasov.

The City of Nis has secured the money and all the necessary permits for the development of the square in front of the Belgrade Gate, and in addition to that, a special Sector has been announced as well, which will pertain exclusively to the Nis Fortress and the events taking place within and outside its walls.

According to councilor Anastasov, the Nis Fortress should get a whole new look on the Belgrade Gate side during the autumn or by the end of the year.

The value of the project is RSD 46,888,644.47. The City of Nis applied for the necessary funds for the execution of these works at the public invitation of the Ministry of Culture – Cities in Focus 2023 – and initiated the procedure of the execution of the works – the Program says.

Speaking about the Fortress, which is celebrating its 300th anniversary this year, Anastasov mentioned the greenery and the shrubbery that had been visible for a long number of years on the edifice’s ramparts. It is still visible, but mostly on lateral and rear sides.

– The Mediana public enterprise has been cleaning it regularly since last year, and this requires precise guidelines by the Institute for Protection of Monuments. Last year, we treated the walls with chemicals, but they didn’t take everywhere and, since a month ago, Mediana has been treating the walls from the front to the rear part – Anastasov said.

The Nis Fortress is a cultural monument of great importance, and the Belgrade Gate had been obstructed by the “Cvetna Pijaca” green market for decades before it was removed recently. The money for the development of that space is secured through the public invitation of the Ministry of Culture “Cities in Focus 2023”, for which the City of Nis applied.
